Youth Leadership Programme

  • A three tiered qualification covering three educational levels. Level 1Participant, Level 2 - Assistant Leader and Level 3 - Leader.

Youth Leadership Programme

Through survey-based research, IBM discovered that creativity is deemed the most important leadership quality among leaders themselves. The survey included perspectives from 1,500 corporate heads and public sector leaders on what drives them in managing their companies in today’s world. They found that creativity was ranked the most important leadership quality for success in business, outweighing integrity and global thinking. With this in mind we have written and developed a creative leadership youth course to nurture future leaders who have originality, imagination, vision, innovation and progressiveness.

Programme Overview

This course develops young people's skills in team working, leadership, organisation, planning and time management. It also assists building motivation, self confidence, social skills and competencies.  

Participants work together on a project of which they take complete ownership, supported and guided by a facilitator and the candidate workbook. The ‘Leader’ designs and plans the project, the 'Assistant Leader' aids the Leader to ensure that the project runs successfully, and the 'Participants' take part in the project and start to learn the skills required to become a creative leader. The Leader has 30 active hours with the team to pull their exciting project together. The week will culminate in a presentation of the planned event.

Programme Aims

The world requires leaders at all levels. Whether this be in Government, business, education, sport, healthcare, local or specific community groups or settings. The aim of this qualification is to provide a three tier training programme to award young people’s participation and learning of leadership skills as future life skills and as an introduction to entrepreneurial project management and development.

Young people discover their talents when challenged. The development of creative thinkers, problem solvers and leadership come from enabled access to take part in projects with set goals, meaningful rationale and with community benefit. Even the smallest project can lead to BIG learning.

Programme Model

This three tiered programme is a graduated build up of skills recognition, confidence and discovery of self. Each candidate at whichever level, has a part to play in a team to achieve the outcome. Courses can be delivered over time or in intensive periods.

Team Participant

Participants will have responsibilities within the development team of a new project. The Team Leader will oversee the Participants progress to create a one off, manageable event, product or progression of a new idea/scheme within a community. The participants will be expected to evidence that they understand:

  • The desired outcome of the project

  • The planning process of the project they're involved with.

  • The key features of the role they are undertaking within the project.

  • How to evaluate the final outcomes and self assessment of their personal input into the project.

  • Evidence the project leaders assessment of their performance to realise the project.

Level 1

Assistant Team Leader

Participants will undertake the role of assistant leader for a project. The project will be designed to facilitate an event, product or progression of a new idea/scheme within a community. The assistant leader will be required to evidence:

  • They understand the desired outcomes of the project and are responsible for documenting the processes within the agreed timeline of the planning stages of the project to meet its goals.

  • To evidence that they have fulfilled assistant leadership responsibilities delegated to them by the project leader.

  • Document the process, tasks that they and members of their team undertook to see the project through, end to end.

  • Be able to evaluate their own performance of the assistant leadership tasks they were given at the end of the project and how they contributed to the final outcome.

  • Be able to evaluate the project outcome as a whole including any changes, suggestions they would make if the project is to be continued or rerun.

Level 2

Team Leader

Participants are responsible for the design and facilitation of a project to realise an event, product or progression of a new idea/scheme within a community. The project is to be used by the Leader as a ‘pilot’ for a possible longer term initiative that could be taken forward in the future. As leader, the participant will be required to:

  • To complete a formal project proposal brief and construct a team to facilitate their idea.

  • Present to the team how the project, if completed successfully, could be taken forward as a project that has more longevity.

  • Plan and design the project timeline and document the delegation of duties, monitoring points and roles within their team.

  • Oversee and document the development of the project, working with the assistant leader who will document and evaluate the process details as the project unfolds.

  • Document the rationale of any changes and leadership decisions made within the process.

  • Use their own documentation and that of the assistant leader to produce an overall evaluation of the project on its completion, including the assessment and accreditation of the parts/roles played within the team that led to its final outcome.

  • Disseminate these identifications to the team as post project feedback.

  • Project debrief - Identify any changes to take forward to ensure the longevity and success of the longer term initiative identified in the project proposal.

  • Positively feedback to team members on their contribution to the project and assist them with their lower level responsibilities, paperwork etc.

Level 3
 
Course Delivery

The 'PAL' Youth Leadership programme has been designed to ensure that it can be delivered as flexibly as possible, giving each institution the freedom to work it around their timetabling, teachers working hours, available venue space. All learners complete the same amount of project activity time.

For flexible delivery, the four approved structures for this are:

Half Term Model

6 weeks of 4 hour sessions 

Full Term Model

15 weeks of 2 hour sessions 

Annual Model

30 weeks of 1 hour sessions 

Intensive Model

5 days of 6 hour sessions 

It is strongly recommended that these sessions are conducted within a consistent daily or weekly timeframe. The shorter the time frame the more excitement and engagement builds around the project.

A delivery guide will be provided for centres and teachers to be able to support their candidates' learning. The learning is independent in structure for each of the candidates and a ‘coaching’ or ‘mentorship’ approach should be applied. For this reason all learning and knowledge material will be incorporated into the candidate workbook. The courses are highly practical, working in small teams, in after school clubs, peripatetic environments, school project hours/CAS allocated time or for focused holiday programme activity.

Mapping to International Baccalaureate / CAS

Schools that offer the International Baccalaureate will find this qualification useful to fulfil students CAS (Creative, Arts, Service) requirements, offer additional (dual) qualification and UCAS points for entry to Universities. The ‘PAL’ course maps directly with the requirements of CAS, supports teachers to deliver CAS over time or in intensive periods. To find out more click here to view our information brochure.

Applying to teach this programme at your school

Should you decide to deliver this course using your own internal teaching talent, the school will be required to fill in a 'Centre Approval Form' and pay the relevant centre fees, which are charged annually. Once approved as a registered centre you will be sent a welcome pack via email giving you access to deliver all CEI’s accredited programmes and cast medals, more information about further programmes can be found here.

Programme Fees

You can choose to deliver the course at your centre using one of your team as the facilitator and you only pay for the moderation of your candidates courses. You must enter your candidate's information and pay for the moderation at least four weeks prior to the programme commencement, so we can allocate a moderator to assist you during your facilitation.

Registering Your Students for Programme Assessment

Once you have a group of students you can log into the Centre Portal to register and make payment for your candidates by inputting candidate information using the ‘PAL’ Programme Application Form. Please note that you must register and pay for each candidate at least four weeks prior to your first pre-planning meeting. There are minimum candidate requirements for each programme, please see below: 

 

Minimum/maximum candidates per group:

  • 1 Leader (Max 1 Leader)

  • 1 Assistant Leader (Max 2 Assistant leaders) 

  • 10 participants (Max 15 participants)

 

Facilitators can manage 1- 4 groups at any one time. Additional facilitators can be provided by the school, should you wish to enter more candidates.
